>>89472468they drew from s4 for a lot of the character skills/features and visual style, tf2 more for the maps and game modes. the ctf mode in s4 had symmetrical maps with perfect visibility so sniping was more of a base defense thing, to score you had to dodge like crazy, wait for your counter-sniper, or your team had to overwhelm them, which made it super intense. of course blizz designed the game completely wrong to take advantage of what they were copying, a game mostly about payload is going to favor tanks and make sniping obnoxious.
what really fucks with me is that anyone who actually PLAYED s4 knows mindshock and turrets were widely hated and banned, but they STILL put them in the game!!! probably because it worked fine in global agenda (tf2 killer popular during OW's development) but that game also had big open maps with lots of sight lines, which again gave stealth and defensive characters a very different and important purposethe thing i'll never get about overwatch is the core gameplay of slowly jogging on the ground and tracking with mid-range automatic weapons. somebody really thought the blandest and most boring popular shooting gameplay would pair well with features ripped from high-flying parkour rocket jump games and have the strengths of both. hero shooters are a terrible idea in general because they took the "mobility shooter" concept, ripped it into individual morsels of mobility and gave one or two here and there to different characters, so no one character is ever fun.
