Hana Macchia was once the world, now she is just doing ok. That is the best way to summarize this vtuber. She was one of the very first vtubers to ever stream in english and was for a long while during 2019 and beginning of 2020 she was the biggest english language vtuber. She was absolutely huge. 4 digit numbers every single stream. Memes, fanart, internal jokes, all were to be found in abundance. But Hana wasn’t having it at all.
Hana was part of Nijisanji ID. Nijisanji at this time didn’t see any potential in english markets yet and wanted to only expand in other asian countries which included Korea, Indonesia and India. But the ID vtubing market was not developed yet at all the EN world had huge potential as it was completely starved of vtubers. Hana was an american expat student, with no streaming experience, studying in Indonesia short-term who just happened to be accepted into nijisanji ID. She did her debut in Indonesian, but she quickly started speaking the language she was most comfortable with, english.
She became huge. Absolutely huge. No other english vtuber couldn’t even begin to compete. But she had a serious infliction of imposter syndrome. Her nijisanji genmates were all doing absolutely horribly while she was enjoying incredibly success. She felt she was totally undeserving of all of this fame and she absolutely hated it. Her method to cope was to promote her genmates while totally de-buffing herself.
Entire weeks of only fall guys. Horrible streams with nothing interesting happening at all. She felt completely uninterested and hating on every fan of hers. But most importantly she banned her dad from her streams. Her dad originally appeared all the time and was quite frankly more important than her to the fanbase at large. From now on she had huge losses. But this had a good consequence. The only fans remaining were the few who had genuinly fallen in love with her. The ones who didn’t give a single what she was streaming, the ones who only wanted to see her live once more, every single day.
And this leads us to today. All of her viewers are in love with her, genuinely. They all behave as loyal slaves. The atmosphere is comfy and everyone are incredibly loyal. And hana herself.... she feels honestly incredibly happy. She wants this tight-knit loyal, happy and simple community. This is what she wanted all along. She never wanted fame, she never wanted numbers, she wanted a comfy community who supported her and who never complains or cries and who just join to vibe with her. She has what she wants and that’s it. And honestly, there is nothing wrong with that. She prioritizes comfyness over numbers and I respect that.
