At worst the 3 brothers can be annoying when wanting to cuddle, or I wake up with two scratches on my face because they failed to walk over me while I'm asleep, but they're not bad. The older ones are pure rescues so they're more anti social but they still love getting pet and one will yell at you if you look at her long enough without petting her. I think you've just had run ins with bad cats.
