if you work out consistently at max effort this will happen, and it will happen more frequently as you get more experienced (bigger muscles require more recovery,) usually settling in the 4-8 week range depending just how hard you train (training with reps in reserve is less fatiguing, on the other end of the spectrum post-failure training such as myoreps are immensely fatiguing)
this is called a "deload" and people training seriously do it intentionally, each cycle of pushing their body to the limit and then taking a deload is called a "mesocycle." you don't HAVE to do that but keep in mind at some point fatigue will accumulate and you will "fall off the wagon" as you call it.
