A bunch of self interested rich white guys got mad jealous and decided to spin the whole "look at da black man eating watermelon how disgusting" narrative to stifle their businesses which resulted in those racist cartoon minstrel shows of black people eating watermelon. I don't know the entire story but that's the gist of it.
