If you have all simples or a pair of seat wind/prevalent wind/dragons you can call (chi, pon, kan) it's often faster to call but usually has less value than Riichi, if you have some dora in hand it's a good option.
Don't bother "not dealing in", just try to get in tenpai as often as possible.
Not shown in picrel is Pinfu, a yaku you'll often see with Riichi but it's a bit hard to explain so i didn't include it, basically means you have no triplets, no honors*
honor tiles that have no value to you (=wouldn't give you a yaku as a triplet) are ok), and you're waiting on two side of a shape, for example: 56 shape in tenpai is waiting on 3 and 6. but 12 is not pinfu because you're waiting on 3.
