To all unmotivated Ruffians who have given up learning Japanese: Just learn Hiragana and Katakana (I'd start with Katakana which is for Engurishu loan words).
After this, you'll be able to read things like tags in titles or signs in anime, which is immediately rewarding. The most important side-benefit of this however, is getting familiar with the phonetic system. Currently, you might recognize words by how they sound, but you can't do anything with it. Being able to transcribe words from speech enables you to check them as you encounter them. You'll basically start doing reps half-automatically by the power of curiosity. It's a passive benefit you'll completely miss out if you don't learn Hiragana+Katakana, so start TODAY.
I did this 2 years ago and I feel my IQ expanding as I learn more random things over time and start understanding speech more just by sheer experience. You don't need to go full samurai, just start with fun Japanese squiggly rune challenge for now. It's great being able to read the runes in everyday situations where most people get completely filtered.
