From Heracles to Achilles and from Antigone to Oedipus all of these characters had different motivations which various authors use to communicate different themes. Not only that the characters have their own personalities. Achilles, for example, becomes so distraught after the death of Patroclus that his rage defies the wills of the gods themselves. Then there's someone like Aeneas whose love of Dido is a major plot point and is an amazing turning point for his character.
