YFU started out super popular because of her novelty. The guy who made her 3D also made Mel's 3D and at the time it was seen as extremely impressive tech. Like Mel the initial stuff was basically a team effort so there was probably someone involved who worked to get her name out there beyond the normal means of a chuuba just getting popular through Twitch raids or whatever.
I think her decline in popularity just trends with so many other vtubers and it was because she wasn't consistent enough. Her streams were very high effort compared to a 2D girl in the corner of a stream playing video games which I think is why she didn't stream that much. That and Digi sounds like he was annoying to work with. When YFU went indie after LOLA I was thinking

As for 4chan popularity (which we'll just consider a separate thing) YFU barely had a few posters beyond myself. /pmg/ hated her because they viewed her working with Digi "the big bad who wronged the precious blueberry bagel Melody" as her being complicit or in agreement with his harassment or whatever.
There was a single moment where the VShojo girls were nice to YFU and that was during the VShojo fake application doxxing situation because she made a comment about how Nux was mean to her or something which a few chuubas like Vei replied like
>you so right queenbut then the Nux drama was resolved in like a day and YFU went back to doing things mostly solo.
I say "mostly" because YFU was also one of the only chuubas beyond Obake PAM to do big collaborative projects with other indies. It's actually really interesting that there are VODs of concerts and musicals featuring chuubas like Lumi(tuber) and Haruka and a bunch of graduated proto-/lig/gers still on YFU's YouTube channel.
This was before the NijiENs brought in the twitter ilk and turned all of Western vtubing into some petty high school drama, but that's just one boomer's opinion.Anyway, that's your history lesson for the day.
