Making fun of Italians is done completely out of endearment. Italians have nothing to prove, their country is beautiful and they have contributed more to western civilisation than almost any other culture on earth. They're seen as romantic, passionate, good humoured and beautiful, so taking the piss is not only fine but a long standing tradition of positive cultural exchange.
