Quite simply, entertainers/content creators don't need an avatar or a pretty look to draw in a crowd. The content is what counts.
Many content creators have adapted or simply improved their content over the years. If they grow stagnant or become forgotten, they will inevitably receive less attention on the entertainment sphere. They will move on from the internet, or adapt to it. There is also the option of carving out a niche that you specifically like, and simply hope that people will watch.
