Whereas perhaps in a small mining town in early 1900s Wales would really only care about stuff happening in their own community, because it's what their friends and family talk about, now ppl also are a lot more conscious of things happening across the globe. Something like the Russo-Urk war might not even be on the average ppl's mind unless you're some urban intellectual.
