I know that I'm reaching a bit here, but I could reckon that this is why hyenas (spotted ones at least) are more of a scattering of groups that can be some sort of loose 'clan' instead of the clandestine ones seen in other social animals as some big cats are the same way most of the time (in certain circumstances).
