Imagine mita as mercy and a bunch of versions of mercy that are all still her but slightly different interacting and wanting to spend time with you/stay with you, doesn't that sound appealing? As for the gameplay I guess it's just there to present the story in an immersive way that lets you interact with all the mita as closely as possible.
