Unless there's something really really nasty, your phone is pretty safe if you just keep an eye on what permissions you give to an app and NEVER allow an app to become a device admin. The best protection really is to read and not just click "allow" because otherwise it won't work.
Be careful with anything that wants to establish VPN connections. Android warns you that they'll see all your traffic. But apps also do this for Adblocking on your local device. You should be sure that such an app is trustworthy.
To break your phone, you'd need root or a some really stupid decisions.
Remember: Allowing an app to read your address book could mean it sends it to some server in the background. Don't just allow everything.
