I only screwed up once in the countryside when there were no other cars around and turned into the wrong lane at an intersection and drove down the wrong lane for a few seconds. I go an ETC card that auto charged the tolls to it. Didn't even have to stop. I forgot how much it was since it was split between a few of us. Had no issues with parking besides at Arakurayama Sengen Park because it was peak cherry blossom season.
