But the others in the series are good, if not better.
VC 2 is a psp exclusive that turned everyone off from being graphically simpler and tonally different from the first game, as it's a typical japanese high school setting (you're an officer in a war college), but that's only the first third of the game. It changes to the more familar tone of VC1, but reviewers never got that far. The expansion of roles, level up system, and the smaller maps that you can move units between are all better imo.
VC 3 is the best in the series, but since 2 tanked in sales, it never got an official EN translation. There's a fanpatch that does 90% of the game. It's also a psp exclusive, but takes some of the gameplay improvements of 2, with the more serious tone of the 1st, with a campaign map that lets your choose your patch and the ability to completely change people's classes or combine them.
There was a long lul in the games, and then semi-recently they released Valkyria Chronicles 4- which is the first one that was console/pc focused since 1. Mechanically, it pretends like 2 & 3 don't exist and feels like it's a direct improvement on 1.
Story wise, 1, 3, and 4 all occur concurrently, so you can play them in any order. 1 and 4 are the most accessible, having good PC ports. 2 & 3 you need an emulator.
