you can assume that the mansion actually did provide ~some~ merchant due to both the curse and the beast's desires, we just never saw his sprite and were looking at our boy Yukimasa the whole time, the merchant just happened to have a similar story to him with the lover waiting for him, which wasn't an uncommon thing for young men in the trade back then.
