It's a lot of complicated physics shit but the tl;dr is 60 hz due to having a higher frequency is better for long-distance transferrence of electricity which is good for the US because it's so big and the people so spread out, while 50 hz is better for low-power applications over smaller distances which is good for Europe because everything is so close. And now you know why each region uses the setting they do. Also you generally can do higher voltage in 50hz
Also fun fact, Japan is afaik the only country that uses both 50 and 60 hz, depending on which side of the country you live in.
