They are the only company in China that has any clout with the CCP because of their ownership and running of Weibo, the CCP equivalent of Google/Facebook/Spotify/Amazon/Instagram/Twitter/Banking Industry/GPS Tracker.
They were the only ones who didn't have to follow the party line on that front, because if the CCP ever fought too hard against Tencent, the entire party would probably start falling down as they know they don't have the ability to run the Firewall without Weibo's centralization, let alone the Social Credit system.
