As you keep venturing further and further, "hounded" by Shiori, you find ecosystems and things that support themselves (like weird magical rats you hunt for food or a lake with clear water). Shiori is happy to talk to you, but its clearly not human and barely blinks. You even realize she doesnt sleep, she just watches you all night.
