Shadow is the opposite of Sonic in every way and unlike Sonic, a natural born hedgehog, Shadow is artificial - so even his running itself isn't natural either, using rocket skates to propel him along rather than just his feet. It's a small thing but it also goes a long way to showing you Shadow's personality - how truly apathetic and uncaring he is to the world - it shows you that, unlike Sonic, he doesn't actually care about or enjoy running he just wants to get where he is going as quickly and effortlessly as possible, running is just a tool to him so he doesn't bother going fast himself, he uses rocket shoes to it for him efficiently. Shadow COULD go fast himself if he wanted (and even faster than Sonic) using only his feet but he just chooses not to and relies on the rocket shoes instead to spare as much effort as possible as he is completely preoccupied with accomplishing his goals.
This is why he is THE COOLEST.
