Most americans and canadians don't give a shit what your race is. If you can speak english to the point where we can understand it, and you're actively trying to get your point across instead of giving up, most of them will accept you.
That's kind of a big reason why Uki was so freaked out at the idea of people just saying hello to each other. Outside of some crazy hicks in the midwest and south, they're usually pretty welcoming.
