So, I wanted to write a bit of piece on the bookwyrm, and I started to read on wyrms and stuff.
Apparently, the european dragon as we know it is a medieval product. The romans, germanics, etc. all had serpents similar to the eastern ones (unsurprisingly, since they are both based on either snakes, egyptian crocodyles, or both) .
The modern dragon is probably an evolution of the french/roman wyvern. On wikipedia they mention that Helios' steeds were winged snakes but all I can find are horses. Not that it matters really, the wyvern is the european variant of the winged snake which itself comes from the cobras.
Anyway this went nowhere except making me to realize that wow snakes need better PR management because no one has ever liked them.
Also it sent me on a rabbit hole of dragon speculative evolution, which I will definitely use.
