That's part of why parasocial relationships with the vtubers happen. Furthermore, everyone who's 'funny' has styles of humor they tend to latch onto more than others because that's usually what they themselves would consider funny if it was someone else doing it.
If you've watched enough of his streams, you'll eventually pick up that his chat is responsible for most of his insecurities. He's a guy that was probably at one point very confident and has gotten knocked down a few pegs by the internet memeing his appearance and intelligence.
Being careful with what he says has always been a personal policy of his, one that's worked well so far and honestly I appreciate it. I watched a stream of his the other day where he was taking quizzes and when a political question came up, he blacked out the screen when picking the answer. His whole thing is he wants anyone to be able to feel like they can enjoy the streams without being alienated by personal opinions. It's a good strategy, and is one that I believe has also played an important role in the success of vtubers.
Fuck I can't believe I wrote an essay about this but I really don't think it was a fair critique. He doesn't do many of the things streamers tend to do that most find annoying and 'streamer-ish' and is the closest thing I've seen yet to la creatividad: male edition.
