Kek is derived from how koreans write their equivalent of lol. It was popularized during the time when starcraft broodwars had a huge esports scene. Blizzard then took that and used it for the languages in World of Warcraft, making it so that if a Horde player typed out lol, their character which is speaking orcish would instead say "Kek" in the eyes of an Alliance player. 4chan, which has long been a hive for nerds, simply picked this up.
