I don't envision Plaiduaine Hive as being completely annihilated, but rather damaged enough that large sections of it have been rendered inhospitable, while active combat (probably some hellish space vietnam shit from the invader's POV?) is still ongoing in others...
basically setup for a future story, maybe. All that leading to a portion of the population having to escape to save their barks.
