I'm not one to shill and it's not the time or the place, but if someone wants to watch an amazing historical miniseries that's not American (it's Italo-French) I recommend "Mussolini - Son Of The Century" in the strongest possible terms. I binge watched the whole 8 one hour episodes yesterday, it's that good. It's REALLY good, it's actual kino as in actual cinematography which Hollywood has long forgotten how to make. The whole thing is a visual and musical masterpiece, with a heavy emphasis on theatrical performance and futurist principles. Both of these are integral to the theme and the setting and the result is downright amazing. I don't remember watching anything this good that's live action in decades. DECADES.
This isn't a war or action series, there's of course action (quite a bit of it) because of the theme and setting. It's a historical series after all, a deep character study of Mussolini and the Italy around him. I can't even show any clips because it doesn't work that way, the narrative and the visual style are so tightly packed and flow into each other that it's hard to find a clip and say "Yeah look at this this is great." Also, no, this isn't a dull or documentary like thing, from start to finish this is full of life and blood and drama and everything. You'll get hooked from the start.
Also, D'Annunzio. There are two individuals in recent history that I find fascinating - one is D'Annunzio and the other is Yukio Mishima. I am biased towards D'Annunzio because his story revolves around Rijeka (Fiume) which is a Croatian city and a whole story onto itself with the sex and the drugs and so on. D'Annunzio is a guy I genuinely like, despite historical reasons.
So if you want to watch something fucking amazing and Krampus approved give this show a watch. Drop whatever the fuck you're wasting your time on and just do it, you won't be sorry. I watched it on a whim and expected it to be shit but it's raw gold, like a 9/10 leaning towards a pure 10. I think it's THAT good. Please watch it, you owe it to yourself to watch something this good.
