Being nice and friendly with customers is both what you are being paid to do when you work on registers and also a habit that just kinda develops the longer you do it, especially towards nice customers. Point is that casual and friendly or not the customer-cashier interaction is first and foremost a business transaction that to you might be your only social interaction of the day but to the worker is just one of a long blurry rotation of customers making purchases.
