There is a need for a reason: the modern world has left us critically isolated from one another.
The demonization of the opposite sex comes from a lack of interaction and understanding.
Consider for example the "women can't be funny" meme or " otakus are all losers"
On the very least, this entire experiment helped some /a/nons to understand maybe women aren't the demons /r9k/ pretends they are. That there are nice hiki girls out there playing FFXIV all day who do not fit the stacy stereotype.
This idea alone made some people try to better themselves. /hlgg/ calls it the "Lars reps" - using the anime girl as an emotional crutch until you are able to regain your footing.
It is an illusion of course, but one that can have real positive consequences in your life... if you use it correctly. Sometimes stuff like this will happen but then again, having your girl move on to someone else is part of the girlfriend experience too. Better learn to deal with breakups in the virtual sphere first.
