Anyway, already back then I had it hammered in me by some old grognards that the best guitarist in the world is not the lead guitarist of a big band but some obscure studio musician known only to industry professionals. When the lead guitarist got drunk and had a grand old time with his future bandmates, the studio musician was at home honing his technique. When the lead guitarist studied composition, the studio musician was at home honing his technique. When the lead guitarist was out there talking to promoters and soliciting barkeeps for gigs, the studio musician was at home honing his technique. And that's why the lead guitarist is on Kerrang's 100 best guitarists of all time list and the studio musician gets called to record his solo whenever he's too high to meet the deadline.
But people really want their favourite to be the greatest thing ever, and for some reason that always boils down to technical skill most of the audience is not even capable of judging in the first place. I mean, if we truly cared about technical skill that much, all of us would be listening to classical.
