running is not inherently bad for your knees unless done very wrong or you're morbidly obese.
Running is my 2nd most frequent cardio staple, and both of my knees are still perfectly intact (including meniscus and ACL).
To run without risk of injury:
1. do not heel-strike, run on the balls of your feet
2. do not run on non-reciprocating surfaces (concrete, asphalt), run on grass , gravel, dirt, sand
3. don't run in shoes with big cushioned soles and narrow toeboxes. wide toebox zero drop shoes only
If running is unavailable, rounds on a heavy bag is the next best thing, but unless you know what you're doing you will injure yourself.
