I've been really enjoying Sonny's Apex Legends stream! The running joke is that Apex is a zatsudan game - and Sonny really exemplified that because he spent almost an hour in the firing range casually practicing tracking while talking about visiting the aquarium with Luca and Nina. He's gotten some flak before for the relative lack of 'depth' in his in-game commentary - like how he often defaults to just narrating what he's doing or making cute noises - so it's nice to see him actively try to tell stories while playing. His gameplay suffered a bit for that, but in all honesty it's not like he can really get worse at Apex and I liked hearing about penguin facts and sushi. Laughed at the part where he asked Nina, in the middle of an underwater tunnel, 'Wouldn't it be funny if the glass broke and we all drowned?' Typical Sonny humor.
As for the actual Apex part of the Apex stream - well, he's still terrible. He's got no map awareness and doesn't know how to manage his inventory, but he does seem to be semi-serious about learning. I think spending time in the firing range was actually a good choice for him since there's a lot of little gun minutiae in the game to familiarize himself with, and I think he'll learn more as he tries everything out at his own pace. He finally learned that a charge rifle isn't a close range weapon, for example. He's growing.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk. I've lived within sight of the ocean all my life; walking along tide pools and visiting the aquarium is almost synonymous with my childhood. Something about Sonny's genuine excitement over marine wildlife just makes me sentimental.
