Georgia as a united entity is rather modern, it was first a united kingdom in the early 10th century. The ancient state of Colchis (named after the city of Colchis) is where Jason and the argonauts sailed and Iberia (not that one) was one of the first countries on this planet to convert to Christianity, second only to Armenia as far as I know.
Georgia has always been influenced strongly by adjacent major powers like Iran, Turkey and Russia which leads to the odd coincidence that the most famous Georgian in history is known as the ruler of the Soviet Union: That is Josef Stalin.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Republic of Georgia with its capitol Tbilisi once again became an independent state.
