If you want an interesting tidbit about the fandom, it was really creative. There's a game you might've heard about, Yume Nikki, that has a staggering amount of fan-games. There's so, so many and they are still being actively made every year to this day. And a lot of the older games have their own fan-games too, it's really fascinating to see so much dedication to the short pixel stories made on an ancient program.
If russian rpg-maker sphere is anything to judge by, I bet there's a lot of big localized communities, that never really overlap.
