Probably the single most consequential and far-reaching piece of legislation in my lifetime was the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (aka the Patriot Act), and that was really really bad, but it was also uniquely bad in a way nothing since can really be equivocated to without it being a false equivalency.
