I think Mori mentioned it in passing that it hasn't been really used in over 20 years, which would be before Scout was born. I'm assuming, on a whim, that Ma and Pa moved onto the farm shortly before the birth of Scout and they both found out about the mine to keep their finances up. I'm guessing since the mine is essentially a bunch of flesh and likely souls fused together into a collective intelligence, it's the work of a rogue mage who wanted a resource of Perfected Metals to use. Since the mage either left or might have even fallen prey to it (probably given to the fact that meat-mine became sentient), it's probably a novel abomination or even a pseudo-Promethean of sorts.
