He found out he had the authority to own the IP of any original characters he created, so he made a bunch of OCs, including a spin-off series of Knuckles extended family, then when SEGA introduced their own characters related to Knuckles he sued them. The lawsuit lasted almost a decade and was super messy and now he's blacklisted from the comic and video game industry and just runs the convention circuit to scrape by.
