40K became more mainstream than Fantasy (also with more lore by a lot), but thanks to the series of Total War, Fantasy Warhammer managed to get REALLY popular with that RTS *ngl, if you love RTS with a fantasy setting then those games are for you*
Also 40K is more known because Games Retardshop killed fantasy (no really, they literally destroyed the world with a pseudo Apocalypse in lore) for a 40K copy of fantasy... now fantasy has its own """Space marines"""
