>>57030756I wanna minisperg about hereditary because I love it. Phone post so shorter than usual.
One of the best things about horror as a genre is that you can choose your difficulty level (lol). Let's say you have a cute bird in your group who is bad with horror. You realize the overall horror power level of your group and start cracking jokes. This is fun, it's fun for people who love horror too, and the only drawback is we always have to listen to people who clearly do get a little anxious about horror talk about how it's just funny and they only like to make fun of it. Ok. Sure man. As long as we get to watch, right?
The more you want to enjoy the horror itself, generally the quieter you get. Not a hard rule. Usually a group finds its balance pretty fast.
Hereditary is honestly just a truly unnerving movie. Usually muh psychological horror stuff is a meme. And there are more unnerving movies. Imo the new suspiria is absolutely fucking dreadful to watch with its body horror. But as gorgeous as that movie is, it feels kinda cheap in comparison to hereditary, where the genuine grief is what underlies the tension. Horror movies have the natural issue of the genre making it very hard to empathize with the characters. People complain about the characters always being assholes... They're not entirely wrong. There are reasons for it a bit outside of the scope of this post. A lot of movies would actually be worse if they tried to make the characters le empathetic.
But hereditary makes you feel genuinely awful for this weird little fucked up family with that weird fuckin little girl at the center that spoilers spoilers spoilers. And that fucking POPPING noise with the mouth ugh it is fucking magnificent. And the sense of inevitability as there's so much active conspiracy to get the family to do the wrong supernatural satanic movie, by actual people, by an actual cult, and the fact that the mothers bad decisions are driven by her weird neuroses mixing with her grief, and that she has a perfectly reasonable humanist view of her fucked up family including her mother... Oh man. And the cult lady who reached out to her seeming really kind.
And the fucking swimming scare. You know the one. In the air. That one is so good. That one gave me anxious happy little butterflies when I saw it. I was grinning from ear to ear man.
I fucking love hereditary. This wasn't even an analysis because I doubt it makes sense to anyone. I just love that film and it makes it easy to express my love for the horror genre.
Midsommar... Honestly kind of fucking mid! It's funny. Kind of repulsive though... And in a way that I realized I didn't like that much. It's extremely interesting though and it'd be retarded for me not to point out it's genuinely good horror.
Ty for coming to my Ted talk.
