It also loops back around to the same reason that people feel that "working out fixes depression", you put in effort and get to see the physical manifestation of your efforts over time, which many attach meaningfulness/spiritually fulfillment upon reflection. The fulfilment doesn't come from "hurr durr I did something, neurochemicals feel gud", it comes from the psychological feeling that you're actually changing from a time period that made you miserable. Many can't get that just from a physical change and need an emotional or other type of change to get out of a depressive rut (assuming you're not just genetically predisposed to depression)
