At a certain point numbers doesn't matter because chat would just be a nameless tide all the same. 5k 10k 20k 40k do not change your viewing experience at all and noticable differences are in the 5 to 2k range, with breakpoints being 20, 70, 200, 1k and 2k. This is also modified by fan culture and the ratio of lurker vs chatter. Narrowing down the viewership is where memberships come into play. Have too many members and it's no different to a public stream.
