If you watch someone for hours, you're certainly gonna get a better picture of the type of person they are than if you spend hours in a chat with someone... but mostly talk about the streamers.
The best ways to mitigate this deficit are Twitter (but a lot of viewers don't really broadcast their interests on there due to how relevant ones status as a content creator is for engagement or interest at all really) and most probably: Discord. An environment in which one can truly get to know others since the playing field is levelled, since any person's message has no more or less visibility than others. Of course Discord has it's own problems, that many anons will be keenly aware of and that may also lead them to avoiding the service altogether, but I believe that to be a mistake.
