Gods are powered by belief. Once a god has no believers, they die. This also applies to many other beings, criptoids, greys, ghosts, the paranormal: they arent "real" in the sense we are, but belief makes them real.
By the same logic, is it possible to elevate a human to godhood - saints, holy men, they get their powers from people believing they have powers.
In post enlightenment society most sources of belief are gone. Even most city dwelling "god fearing" men do not really believe in god, they believe in the church, in the institutions, in morals, whatever, but they do not truly have faith, in the back of their head they know it is "irrational" to believe in angels and demons. If you want true belief, you need to look in the most backwater redneck town who truly think Jesus can grow them a new arm, and even so, sometimes they believe in the powers of the pastor instead. God isn't dead, but he might be dying, due to lack of true believers.
Now compare that the burning of emotions that are born of an idol concert. Faith and devotion to the point of feinting you will not see in any church nowadays. But these objects of worship are not gods yet. They are still human. This keeps beliefs grounded, rational.
A vtuber however is partially fictional. Because of she is immortal, unaging, immaculate. So, it is easy to imagine them as gods, it is easier for them to become true "idols" and that opens the doors to many things... things that shouldn't be.
This is why also things that shouldn't happen happen. Why prophetic dreams are all around. Why meme magic is more powerful here than in /x/. Why it all began with Eileine, and Ebola chan, and /pol/s attempts at magic back in 2015, why Hololive started with a Christmas miracle, and why the curse of the 25th followed, and why things keep getting weirder and weirder and more stupid as time goes by.
Dreams are messages from the deep, and when you stare at the deep, the deep stares back.
