Reminds me of the permanent shitflinging/sockpuppeting/ragebating during the console war heydays of /v/, where half the people didn't even own the consoles or play the games that were discussed. The remarkable thing then is that even though most people involved know this, they still get mad at it all. It's like at some point along the way they somehow start believing the bullshit they themselves made up.
