The "don't mention PLs" thing exists because they are contractually obligated not to because early on the companies knew that it would give their talents too much bargaining power, so it became a subtly accepted "taboo."
It shouldn't exist or apply to situations like this because all that you not talking about their PLs does is give the company more power. I choose instead to give the person, the individual, that power.
