I have not watched Soma in a long time since Twitch debut. That was probably his most entertaining stream so far. Some personal thoughts which others may not agree on.
Game Choice (Class of '09): fantastic
+ Game itself was good, so much so the stream felt carried hard by it. Straight up nice hook, entertaining trainwreck. Basically I would not have watched Soma otherwise.
+ Game is definitely not something the chuubas I normally watch would ever play. That made me stick around and not hunt for a VOD by someone else. Believe me I did look around but once i understood what the game was about, there is likely no way anyone in seiso corpos would play it.
+ Game was colorful and eyecatching. Normally, Soma's streams are so dull (in color). Both him and the game are very muted color palettes. This game being a lot brighter is very nice. Im not just watching at a black and white TV program.
Marketing
- Plain Thumbnail. Might be a Twitch drawback not being able to change the thumbnail, but it looks like every other thumbnail on his "Past Broadcast" section. Grey on Grey. The only way to notice its a different game is by stopping to read the text. If I were a tourist browsing his channel, I would not notice it among everything else. Considering his other streams outnumber this, few would likely click on this once its buried in the VODs.
- Catalog Advertising. Saw it posted on the other /brg/ related thread with his usual stream notice mugshot. Image tells me nothing about the stream and why I should bother watching it, especially since he is a guy. If it were a screenshot of the game it would have been a lot more eyecatching. I almost did not catch the words Class of '09 which was the only reason I gave the stream a shot instead of watching another chuuba's VOD.
- Funnels/Raids. Sometimes Lulu raids his streams, but none this time. Likely the only people who would catch this stream are regulars or already part of the ecosystem. This being a game that likely tourists might hang around to watch more of but is now wasted.
Basically what I thought was a strong game nerfed by few people getting to see it. I wouldn't have clicked in if I had not known the game since usually Soma=Stalker
Stream
+ Soma's insights into certain details. Not often but things like FYE, the Camel T-shirt, certain old stuff. Its adds to the experience since not everyone knows about it or lives in the US.
- Milking the Content. He had two versions of the game (like a DLC) and played both in one sitting but didn't play the first one to completion. It might be better to fully explore the first one and then save the second for another day for a more coherent experience for vod watchers. Since for the next stream, any viewer who missed this one, would be quite lost.
- Could have more commentary. It does seem he is mostly reacting to the game most of the time though, but it might just be one of those things VN streams don't do well on. Felt like he could yap a bit more about what is going on. It felt like I'm just watching a movie and was tempted to go play the game myself instead.
It might just be my preference, but it was a lot better than the Nth game of Stalker. I have seen him introduce/shill himself to Lulu's new Twitch audience once early on with the games he usually play (Stalker, Mount & Blade, Tarkov) but I dont see why anyone would want to watch a guy play those instead of playing it themselves. I would assume the only people who watches those streams would be his usual audience who would watch him play anything.
But it may just be he just wants to chill and play a game he enjoys most days and isn't too concerned. Also much thanks to Elle who recommended this gem.
