Swedish is not too different from German. I'd say 50% of the vocabulary is the same, often with predictable changes in some words. One thing that is a bit weird is that in Swedish the three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter, were reduced to two, like masculine/feminine and neuter. In a certain way Swedish feels like a more primitive German, as if those Vikings were isolated for a long time so the language didn't develop very complicated constructs, unlike German.
