The first thing she should focus on when just starting out is buying the Quill + Compass form the first town (after getting the necessary funds).
That will track where you are on the map making it easy to navigate, it'll give her a map similar to SOTN where it shows where she's been, and what areas she's yet to unlock.
Note, these will only give you the ability to track your location, the maps themselves need to be bough by this Conifer guy, he can be found in every area selling the map for that area. Similar to in Zelda how you need to locate the map in a chest for each dungeon to unlock that dungeons map.
