A lot of the heartbreak you think about when you imagine your oshi graduating (which almost seems like they're dying) is because of the inefficiency of corporate intellectual property ownership. If Coco had the ability to do a surprise stream, even just once a year, to catch up with us in-character and relive some of the magic again, people wouldn't be nearly as sad. But because her likeness and lore are owned by a corporation, we will never get to see "Kiryu Coco" again, and it does feel as if she is, in some way, dying.
V-tuber fans have a love-hate relationship with idol agencies already, but maybe we need to start thinking more about how work-for-hire and copyright keeps us from enjoying things that would make everyone happier, even at no expense to the original rights holder.
